Wow, for once I was ahead of the curve! I knew this from being a huge Monkees fan in the day. Every Christmas I still put on the album "Head" from their movie.

Are there any other strange Xmas traditions out there?

I knew they had toured together, but did not know how it had come about - I guess I assumed it was some bonehead concert promoter, and not that the guys in the Monkees were blown away by Jimi and just wanted to watch him play. That's pretty awesome.
